The Temple of the Great Sphinx
It seems that this temple was dedicated to the cult of the Sphinx, who was considered to be the sun god Hor-em-akhet. For some reason the temple was not completed. The main architectural feature of the temple is the colonnade around a central courtyard with 24 granite pillars, as in the Mortuary Temple of Khafra. Sockets are cut in the floor to hold statues of King Khafra. The temple has two sanctuaries, one to the east and the other to the west, perhaps to worship the rising and the setting sun. | ||
